TAP confirmed as launch operator for A33neo with Airspace by Airbus cabin

The portuguese airline has signed an agreement with Airbus to be the first operator of the new A330neo airliner and therefore also become the launching carrier to fly the Airspace by Airbus cabin brand in the A330neo.

In 2015, the airline placed a large fleet renewal contract with Airbus which included an order for 14 A330-900neos. Passengers will soon be able to experience the Airspace by Airbus cabin for the first time when these aircraft enter service around the end of 2017.

Highlights of TAP’s Airspace cabin will include: a new welcome area; the latest mood LED-based lighting system with 16.7 million possible color variations; larger overhead bins; new contemporary lavatories and latest-generation IFE and connectivity. The Airspace cabin ambience ensures passengers’ wellbeing, while the signature details and iconic elements will be recognizable throughout the cabin.

The relationship between Airbus and Portugal dates back to 1987 when TAP, then Air Portugal, ordered three Airbus A310s. Today TAP is an all Airbus fleet customer and the largest in Portugal with 61 aircraft in service, including 43 from the A320 family and 18 of the wide-body family, with two additional A330s to enter service as of coming June to support the expansion of the company’s long haul operations. TAP has also placed orders for the latest generation of A320neo and A330neo Families.

The A330-800neo and the A330-900neo are two new members of the Airbus wide-body family launched in July 2014 with first deliveries scheduled to start at the end of 2017. In addition to its new Airspace cabin interior, the A330neo also incorporates latest generation Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines and aerodynamic enhancements. Benefitting from the unbeatable economics, versatility and high reliability of the A330, the A330neo reduces fuel consumption by 14% per seat, making it the most cost efficient, medium range wide-body airliner.

TAP Portugal today announced new daily non-stop service to Lisbon from both New York’s John F. Kennedy International* and Boston’s Logan International* airports.  Launch fares for the new routes start sales today from just 799 EUR (taxes included), for roundtrip travel.

The new daily Boston service starts on June 11 and the new JFK daily flights commence on July 1. Both will be operated with new Airbus A330 aircraft to be delivered in June. In addition, TAP also serves Lisbon from Miami and from Newark. These routes will grow to daily service this summer, and TAP also serves Oporto twice weekly from Newark. Altogether, TAP’s US service will grow to 30 flights per week.

TAP Takes delivery of two new A330’s to leverage its expansion in North America

TAP will phase in two new A330-200 long haul aircraft until next June in order to leverage its plan to expand services in the United States, a market where the company will vigorously promote Portugal as an excellent tourism destination and Lisbon as the prime gateway into Europe for North American travellers.

To achieve such target, TAP will soon launch promotional campaigns and initiatives to promote Portugal in the USA - the largest market worldwide – and also provide the American travellers with an incentive program encouraging them to choose Lisbon as the best stopover when flying from / to Europe.

Meanwhile, TAP has already started the process to obtain the necessary authorizations from both the aviation and airport authorities and is due to announce soon its detailed expansion program for the USA.

According to the US Travel & Tourism Office data, as many as 11 million of North American citizens visit Europe every year and spend some USD 32.5 billion abroad (excluding air travel).  Reason why TAP is strongly committed to capture a share of such revenues and direct them to Portugal.

In view of the economic slowdown currently impacting in a number of TAP’s main international markets, such as Brazil and Angola, TAP felt the need of reducing its exposure and decided to shift its focus and operations to other markets with more potential, thus prompting the company’s plans to extend operations to further destinations within the USA.

The additional A330-200s will be leased in (in operational lease) and start operations with TAP right in time to reinforce services during the peak summer season. With the phase in of these two A330’s, the company’s long haul fleet increases to 20 aircraft.

With a cabin displaying 20 lie flat seats from Stelia Solstys in Executive Class and the new slimline Zim EC01 seats with a 34’’ pitch in Economy Plus and a 31” pitch in Economy, passengers will be provided with added comfort as well as with the most advanced audio and visual systems using the most up-to-date Panasonic EX-3 in-flight individual on-demand entertainment system.

After being completely renovated and retrofitted with new seats, new entertainment systems and new galleys as well as new toilets and lighting, these aircraft are, in every sense, consistent with the most recent generation of aircraft in the world in their class. With seat capacity for 271 passengers – 20 in Executive Class, 104 in Economy Plus and 147 in Economy – these A330 aircraft  already display the new configuration into which the entire  TAP fleet of A330-200s currently in operation is to be retrofitted from 2017 onward.

This is one of the investments underway at TAP today, in addition to the ones recently announced that include the order for 53 new Airbus aircraft; € 60 million for the cabin retrofit of TAP current fleet; € 11 million to retrofit 12 A320-family aircraft with sharklet devices and the complete renewal of the regional fleet that will operate at TAP Express.

14 January 2016

Dear Customer,

The new TAP is now a reality.

Today, we are announcing some very important news to the company and to all our Customers as well, among which I hereby emphasise the renewal of PGA’s fleet, an objective that had been delayed for a number of years due to investment limitations.

Up to next July, we will take delivery of new aircraft - eight ATR72 and nine Embraer 190 - which will allow us to improve the comfort and efficiency of our fleet. With such a new fleet, we will also be able to increase seat capacity available by 47% as well as to achieve significant savings in fuel consumption, with the resulting benefits to environment.
But this heavy investment is not enough on its own.

We are not only renewing our regional fleet, but also adding consistency to TAP brand and product by reinforcing its commercial identity and redesigning our product and services as well.

“TAP Express”is the newly branded product launched by TAP to replace Portugália, PGA airlines, from now on operating with a new fleet, as hereby announced.

We are also announcing the creation of the Porto-Lisbon shuttle, designated as “Ponte Aérea”, to connect both destinations with flights every hour,  adding to 16 roundtrip dailies in the whole. The launch of the Porto – Lisbon shuttle will enable better service on the point-to-point connections and much better conditions for an optimised connectivity to the Lisbon hub operations, providing Customers with easy access to the whole TAP network.

Check our youtube video here

The “Ponte Aérea”  will offer very competitive prices to travel between Porto and Lisbon and an innovative product, with dedicated check-in counters and boarding gates along with fast and easy passenger boarding.

As of next March 27, TAP will increase the number of weekly flights to destinations already served in Europe, Brazil, the United States and Africa, reinforcing our product consistency.

I am sure these are historic days for TAP, now that the airline has the investment capacity to expand and turn into a more modern and competitive airline, one that is responsive to the needs of Customers and strongly committed to serve the markets where it operates.

The investments already underway, which include orders for 53 new aircraft, €60 million to retrofit the cabin interiors of the current fleet, €11 million to retrofit twelve A320-family aircraft with the sharklet technology, €2 million for a new digital reservations platform and the increase and renovation of PGA fleet, will allow us to embrace the future completely confident that TAP Portugal will become stronger and better able to provide improved services, with the same values as always.

Thank you for choosing TAP. We are confident we will be able to surprise you positively as we become increasingly better equipped to respond to your needs and meet your expectations.

Welcome aboard the new TAP.
